Etymology of the Word.
The very name for the world of Erndorth comes to us from the ancient tongue of the now forgotten Drow Elves during the Age of Struggle, the age that immediately predates the Age of Light. Erndorth is a human corruption of the elven word Endorathe, which in the tongue of the Drow elves literally means the "Middle Lands". It was the elves who began calling the mortal plane by the name Endorathe, but to them it is simply the name given to the mortal existence, regardless of which prime plane on which it takes place. To the humans who followed however, the name stuck, but means specifically the entire plane (planet) of the World of Erndorth.
In elven culture, ancient legends tell that the first gods to walk Erndorth raised up the elves as the living, ultimate expressions of the will of the divine on the mortal plane. The ancient elven legends tell that elves were raised up from primitive spirits of nature that walked the world before the gods came. In this way, the elves once believed that their existence as innocent nature spirits was their first phase of existence, followed by the second (or middle) phase, which is their mortal life as an elf. Followed by the final phase of existence where the elves once believed that they would shed their mortal coil entirely, and follow the gods into the outer planes to reside with them as divine beings themselves. Since the time of the Age of Fire however, elves have adopted a more orthodox view of the nature of their souls, yet the ancient legends still exist.
