I have been following the progress of the Virtual Tabletop known as Roll20 for some time now. I played with it a bit and did not find it quite ready for prime time. But that was over a year ago. I just got done checking out the trailer for the latest update of Roll20 on their main web site and I have to say that I am VERY impressed. Seems like its come a LONG way since last I looked at it. I'll admit that I have never actually run anything over it, or even saw a game run using it before, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. Anyway, I am asking you all for your opinions on this. Would you all be willing to play one of our campaign games over Roll20 some night rather than over Fantasy Grounds 2? I'd really be interested to see if it can offer us anything more than were getting. It certainly has a LOT more features, my only concern is its user friendliness. I don't really know if its better or worse than what FG2 has, but I honestly have no real issues using FG2 other than the lack of control over token size and the lack of layers for the battlemaps. So anyway, what say you? Would you all be willing to give Roll20 a shot some night? roll20.net/

Been checking this out in some detail in the last couple hours. I can honestly say that the GUI is VERY different and will take some time to get used to if we decide to give it a shot. In the mean time, also saw this on their beta features blog....thought you might find it interesting.

Mmmmmhhh. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of roll20 over Fantasy grounds. I played in a few games a friend ran over it and was... Less impressed? If there's an overwhelming majority of people who want to try, I'll head on over, but put me in the FGII crowd.

In a bright note, looks like the FG2 team is looking into possibly adding dynamic lighting and line of sight for a future update. I'd also take it as a kindness if they would help me with my screen clutter. Whenever I run a game over FG2 my screen is absolutely filled to bursting with various maps, notes, character sheets, rules reference, etc. I'd like if they divided up the tabletop into say 4 sections that you can zoom into and out of. Each sections holds its own stuff. Battlemap and Tokens in one, notes in another, reference material in another, and so on. Would save me some real-estate on the screen. But anyway, I still love FG2 and its still the best there is so far.
I also recently discovered that in order to use the really great features of Roll20, you gotta subscribe for like $10 month. I thought it was free for all that. Turns out no. You can play with the basic system for free, but all the advanced features that really interested me require $10 month. So now, after discovering that, I'm not as excited about Roll20 as I once was. I'd still be willing to give it a go if everyone else would like to however.

I kind of like Fantasy Grounds. I mean I feel it's a pretty solid online tabletop environment. Easy to get notes on my class/abilities and I much prefer the character sheets. Rolld20 feels like a more freeform system while FG seems pretty focused for 3.5. With that in mind I say we stay.

Seems like the general consensus seems to be to forego Roll20 and stay with FG2. Before finding out about the $10/month subscription required to use any of the awesome features I might have been disappointed. Since discovering that fact however, I'm perfectly OK with staying put as well. Although, once again, if someone REALLY wants to give it a shot, I's still be game.....I'm just less enthusiastic about Roll20 than I was when I made this post.
